I had my first summons for Jury Duty here in Guadalupe County. My first time was in SA. I must say, I really enjoyed my experience here more. For one thing, the courtroom where we assembled and waited was on the third floor of the courthouse. On both sides of the room are very large windows so I could sit and watch the trees swaying with the wind. That is much nicer than the room in the basement of the SA courthouse.
Other things I noticed about serving with my fellow citizens and "the process":
1. A man wore shorts. Who wears shorts to a courtroom? Is it me?? Jeans were seen and the baliff didn't mind those but honestly, are these people thinking. Have they no respect for the courts? Anyway, I thought that was amazing.
2. People don't know their names. Well, maybe they do but if they do, then they are deaf or they are asleep. Sometimes the clerk would call a name 2-3 times and then all of a sudden the person stands and comes forward. A man next to me mumbled about how dumb can you be that you don't know your name. I thought it was funny.
3. No shows. A lot of names were called and the person was not there. What happens to people who don't show up? Do you get in trouble?
4. People have theories. They think if you sit in the back of the courtroom, you are less likely to get called to serve. Hello, they have our names on a list. They don't go by where you sit.
Anyway, I liked serving in Seguin. Why? Because while you wait for instruction, they let you leave the building! So I went to the coffeehouse for a cup of tea. That was so nice. You can't do that in SA.
