Bees' new home

Bees in the yard

The bees are now going a couple of weeks in their new home in Seguin. There was a good spot in the corner of your back yard for them. This is Mark and Smokey (by Mark's legs) checking on the bees. Smokey, actually is just escorting Mark, don't think he's too interested in the bees at this point and he doesn't seem to be afraid of them. Hopefully he will not bother them either.

Each evening, Mark goes out after we get home from work and he checks on them. The first couple of days they were here, he was worried b/c they didn't carry any pollen into the hive at all. Then, with each passing day, he saw they were more active and carrying pollen in as well.

He also explained to me some things about why that was a good spot for the bees. I thought it was very interesting! We turned the opening of the hive toward the white fence, but there is a gap to the left there and they have space to fly out. In a corner like that, he said that they are forced to fly upwards and not all to the sides and into the neighbors' yards. I thought that was good thinking.

When I went with him to check on the bees, he instructed me to stand in the leaves, as he is doing here. Apparently the bees would have had time to get use to the movement of the leaves and so our being there is less startling to them. I liked this idea a lot. I'm still learning about them and after my sting last year, I a touch nervous, just a touch. But this technique was great. We got to stand and watch them busily entering and leaving their hive. And Mark noted they were carrying yellow as well as orange pollen. They were moving too fast for my untrained eyes to see that.

I am really enjoying having them at the house. I like seeing them out back from our kitchen window. And I wonder, where are they going and how far have they flown? And where did the pollen come from so that I know when we get to taste the honey.

Soon, Mark wants to open the hive to check on them up close. Make sure there is still a queen in and see what's going on in there. That should be an interesting shot!

Well hello. I thought I would come by and see what is going on and I learned all about your bee hive and how you are watching it. Did you see the bee pictures on my blog and how the pollen looks in their leg sacks?
